What is “Moderate Dispensationalism” and why do we clam to be “Moderate Dispensationalist”? The word dispensation has been incorrectly defined by many to mean a “period of time.” Though we will be dealing with a time line from Genesis to Revelation, it would be more accurate to state that a Dispensation is a distribution of information within a period of time.
“Dispensations are administrations of truth (methods or systems) that God has dispensed during a period of time. Even though in teaching we may casually use the word “to reference a period of time” it actually goes much deeper” (-Dr. David Walker/ Dr. Douglas Stauffer- The Bible Believers guide to Dispensationalism p. 11)
The dispensation may be easy to spot; start, and stop. For example: Genesis 4:15 “And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.” Cain killed Able, he was marked, No one was to Kill Cain, Let God deal with him (No Capital Punishment) Vs. Genesis 9:6 “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: ..” If you Kill some one you are judged to be killed by man. (Capital Punishment) God deals with people differently in different periods of time.
Why do we clam to be “Moderated Dispensationalist”? All denominations can clam to be dispensationalist in one way or another. So for that very reason we will list the Dispensational Camps to more clearly explain.
1. Normative - Those who follow Scofield, Chafer, Ironside, Walvoord, Pentecost, and Ryrie.
2.Ultra/ Hyper - broken up into two groups: A. The extreme- Bullinger and Welch ( of London) B. The moderate- C. R. Stam, O’Hair and Baker ( of America)
“Hyper/ Ultra- Dispensationalist pervert the scriptures by “wrongly dividing” the word. They eliminate water baptism for this age, misrepresent prayer and confession of sin, and eventually rvert to Calvinism. “ (Dr. David Walker- The Bible Believers guide to Dispensationalism)
3.Progressive- A modern trend in dispensational circles moving ever closer to the adversary of Covenant Reformed theology.
“we can see how close Progressive Dispensationalism has come to Covenant theology in the very way it defines a dispensation.” (-Henzel Ronald- Darby, Dualism and the Decline of Dispensationalism)
“Progressive Dispensationalists call the church “the new Israel” and state that part of the promisses of the Abrahamic Covenant belong to the church. They also teach that Christ is reigning now as King of the Davidic throne in heaven, even though they still believe that He will reign in the future Millennial Kingdom.” (-Dr. David Walker, The Bible Believers guide to Dispensationalism)
“Progressives do not see the church as completely distinct from Israel as Normative Dispensationalists have maintained.” (-Ryrie- Dispensationalism)
4. King James Bible believing (or Moderate Dispensationalism)- This is the stance in which Open Bible Baptist Church will be taking.
“This group cannot be considered “ultra or Hyper” because they hold to water baptism and the Lord’s supper for this age, and apply portions of Matthew, Acts, and Heb. - Rev. to the church Age. They do affirm that salvation has not always been by “grace through faith” Eph 2:8-9 and that no one is the Old Testament was saved by “looking forward to the cross” (-Dr. David Walker-The Bible Believers guide to Dispensationalism)
A few others who have taken the same stance are: Dr. Peter S. Ruckman, Dr. Dave Reese, Dr. Samuel Gipp, Dr. Ken Blue, Dr. Douglas Stauffer, Dr. David E. Walker.
“The outstanding characteristic of this camp is their complete adherence to the AV text as the absolute and final authority.” (-Dr. David Walker- The Bible Believers guide to Dispensationalism)
